ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ’s commitment to students with disabilities started in the early 1970s, even before Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 was passed. Work during the early ’70s, in conjunction with the great Binghamton area work of the Easter Seals, led to collaborative partnerships between students, staff and community members with disabilities. Due to the University’s commitment to inclusion, the Office of Programs for Disabled Students, now known as Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD), was officially founded in 1975.

Over the years, campus has evolved, buildings have become more accessible, technological advances have fostered further inclusion and the commitment to equal access for students with disabilities at Binghamton has never wavered. SSD plans to recognize its 50-year history with events and speakers throughout the year. The culminating event is planned over Homecoming Weekend! We hope you consider joining us as we celebrate 50 years of inclusion in a collaborative gathering with the Institute for Child Development (ICD), which is also celebrating its 50th anniversary.

The ICD provides an array of exemplary programs, resources, outreach and training related to autism to ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ and the greater community. Both the ICD and SSD are committed to assuring that students with disabilities have the best access and best opportunities to thrive.

Stay up-to-date on the important work at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ highlighting our commitment to inclusion, equal access and the promotion of disability awareness in our community, by checking the SSD website or signing up for our SSD alumni and ally listserv by emailing Coordinator for Multicultural Alumni Programs Tamar Boyajian at tboyajian@binghamton.edu. We look forward to seeing you at Homecoming 2025!
