Mario R. Ortiz, dean of the Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences at ϲ, has been named editor-in-chief of . A board-certified community and public health nurse specialist, family nurse practitioner, and respected scholar in both national and international circles, Ortiz emphasizes innovative nursing research, scholarship and practice.

Nursing Science Quarterly (NSQ), published since 1988, is a peer-reviewed journal featuring original manuscripts focused on nursing theory development, nursing theory-based practice, and quantitative and qualitative research related to existing nursing frameworks. Manuscripts are usually contributed by leading theorists, researchers and nurse executives.

On his appointment as editor-in-chief, Ortiz said, “I am honored to be selected as the editor-in-chief of Nursing Science Quarterly. The journal has been a significant publication for the discipline and profession of nursing for almost 40-years. I have thought much about the journal’s central mission and values focused on using unique nursing knowledge to guide scholarship and research. This mission and these values link to my leadership and strategic planning skills that will carry out the work needed to lead and enhance the reputation of NSQ. I plan on building on the outstanding foundation laid down by the founding editor of NSQ.

Before being appointed editor-in-chief, Ortiz contributed to Nursing Science Quarterly for over 15 years. He also serves on the referee panels for Nursing Outlook, the Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care and the Journal of Rural Nursing and Health Care.

Ortiz became dean of Decker College in 2016. He is also the executive director of the college’s Kresge Center for Nursing Research and the Community Health Centers of Practice. In July 2023, he was named the Decker Endowed Chair in Community Health Nursing.

He continues to work in the field as an advanced practice nurse at REACH Medical, with offices in Ithaca and Johnson City, N.Y., focusing on primary care, the treatment of opioid use disorder, the prevention and treatment of HIV, and Hepatitis C testing and treatment. He is the only nurse on the New York State Department of Health’s Public Health and Planning Council; he also serves as chair of the NYS Health Equity Council.

At Decker College, Ortiz teaches graduate courses in nursing theory and philosophy, conceptual analysis and qualitative nursing research. He is also a member of Sigma Theta Tau International and a Fellow in the Nursing Academy of the National Academies of Practice, the American Academy of Nursing and the Royal Society for Public Health.
