Principles of Community

From Breadth, Through Depth, To Perspective

This motto describes critical stages of education that are impossible without exposure to a broad spectrum of experiences and viewpoints.

Binghamton has a campus culture that values community, communication, and diversity. We believe that people can accomplish more by working together, learning from one another, and understanding and respecting one another than they could in isolation or conflict.

Our stated mission as a public university is to create a community for learning that advances diversity, equity and inclusion, international perspectives, and community engagement.

Thus, we adopt the following principles of a respectful and equitable community:
  • We strive for a learning environment that respects the dignity and humanity of every person based on the virtues of civility, mutual respect and understanding.
  • Each person has the right to express thoughts and opinions freely. We encourage open expression and sharing of ideas and perspectives, which benefits everyone.
  • Diversity, equity, inclusion, and the feeling of belonging have value. Each enriches our lives and provides a perspective, which is a crucial element of higher education and intellectual growth.

To abide by these principles, we must:

  • Reject bias, prejudice, and discrimination, including those based on age, color, disability, gender and gender identity and expression, national origin, political affiliation, race, religion, sexual orientation/identity and veteran status.
  • Accept a shared responsibility to create a respectful community and oppose bias when it arises. This requires the knowledge and guidance to respond to bias in a way that is both just and also constructive, respecting the rights of all involved.
  • Acknowledge past wrongs, including bias, prejudice, discrimination, exclusion and injustice, with a goal of reconciliation, progress and learning from our past.
  • Strive to be aware of underrepresented voices who need our support and from whom we can all learn. We must foster an inclusive and equitable campus environment where all voices are welcome and encouraged.
