Elevating the LGBTQ+ Community Health
The Decker Student Health Services Center (DSHSC) and University Counseling Center (UCC) are committed to an ongoing process of ensuring that our students of all sexual identities and orientations feel comfortable and respected when seeking our services.
What you need to know
- Patient rights and responsibilities
- Privacy and confidentiality
The DSHSC and UCC take your confidentiality very seriously. See below how each office protects your privacy:
- Update your information in the Binghamton Banner system
Students can update their personal information campus wide once a semester. Information from Banner is then automatically downloaded into the Medicat record system used by Health and Counseling. The information will remain the same until changed manually by the student. Changes may take some time to update within the system; however, the changes are permanent unless you request an update.
- Update your information for Health and Counseling Services only
To immediately update only your Health and Counseling Services record, log into the patient portal and update the 鈥淢y Profile鈥 section. The change will take place immediately; however, it may need to be updated periodically due to required updates from Banner. These Banner updates occur about once a semester and overwrite your information on the portal.
Choosing a medical or mental health provider
DSHSC
The DSHSC staff has physicians, nurse practitioners, and nurses that can provide sexual health services as well as assist with your gender affirming care (not prescribing HRT at this time). Students can make a specific clinician request among the many DSHSC providers by scheduling an appointment through the . Students can also ask to change providers, or to return to a previous provider.
For off campus health services, the DSHSC team can assist with referrals to local providers that can assist with gender affirming care beyond what the DSHSC can provide.
UCC
The UCC has many generalist clinicians who serve all students with many presenting issues, and all clinicians are well trained and affirming in their approaches to queer students. Students can make a specific clinician request among the many UCC providers. Additionally, there are clinicians with further interest or specialization in serving LGBTQ+ students, and students can request those clinicians when making an appointment. If students wish to have a counselor with a shared identity we will do our best to honor those requests. Students can also ask to change providers, or to return to a previous provider.
For off campus mental health services, the UCC Treatment Coordination team can assist with finding referrals that are individualized to queer affirming psychotherapists and a range of other services to LGBTQ+ populations.
LGBTQ+ services at the DSHSC
The DSHSC has been working hard to ensure that it is a welcoming place for LGBTQ+ students and all students who identify as part of the queer community to receive compassionate and competent medical care. Recent students who have visited our office have noticed the change, with our overall patient satisfaction rate well above 98%.
All of the providers at the DSHSC are comfortable providing care to LGBTQ+ students. All of its providers prescribe PrEP, and some of our providers are taking the two-year WPATH training to become capable of providing hormone replacement therapy for transitioning students. Currently, we are able to offer support to transitioning students by acting as a liaison between the medical provider currently managing their transition and administering the treatment you need on campus.
LGBTQ+ services at the UCC
The UCC strives to create an inclusive and affirming environment for LGBTQ+ students and all students who identify as part of the queer community. Our counselors offer an open and culturally humble approach that individualizes care to each student鈥檚 journey and needs. We understand that LGBTQ+ students have a range of presenting issues that may or may not be related to their queer identity. We also understand that students bring highly sensitive and personal issues, and we maintain high levels of confidentiality (with some exceptions).
The UCC offers individual counseling as well as group counseling, including groups specifically for queer students (pending group availability). The UCC collaborates with the Q Center and offers the Let鈥檚 Talk program weekly at the Q Center as a less formal drop-in counseling option that is easily accessible. For each semester鈥檚 specific Let鈥檚 Talk hours please check the Q Center鈥檚 website or social media. For students experiencing more urgent or time sensitive issues, we offer same day urgent counseling.
After hours counseling is available whenever the UCC is closed through the UCC main number 607-777-2772 (press 2 to speak to a counselor after hours). Counselors may also be able to provide letters of support for gender affirming medical care (when appropriate, or on a case by case basis in context of the situation or assessment). The UCC has many generalist clinicians as well as clinicians who specialize in LGBTQ+ issues.
Campus resource centers

A home away from home, the Center cultivates an intersectional space where all students, faculty and staff at 黑料不打烊 are empowered to be their full, authentic selves. Center programming supports and empowers students, faculty and staff contributing to personal, scholarly and professional success.
