Minor Requirements

The Education Minor requires both coursework and non-academic requirements. The requirements for students admitted to the Education Minor prior to August of 2020 are listed below.

Coursework

The Minor requires a total of four upper-level courses (16 credits total), two required courses, and two electives. The Education Minor is a 3+ semester long commitment. It cannot be completed in 1 semester. 

Note: These courses do not count for New York state teaching certification.

  1. EDUC 406 and EDUC 410 are required. Both courses must be taken at Binghamton and cannot be substituted with any other course. EDUC 406 must be taken first.
  2. The other two courses are upper-level electives. Students have multiple options for selecting courses that suit their interests and academic schedules. At least one of these elective credits must be an Ed Minor elective class. The second elective can be fulfilled through other opportunities, such as taking a an approves cross-listed non-EDUC class, acting as a TA or a completing a pre-approved internship relating to the field of education. Note: If students take positions as teaching assistants, they must submit a petition to request these experiences to count toward their electives. is the link to the petition for counting teaching assistant positions as credit.

If students complete education-related internships that they wish to count as credit, they must they must submit a petition and email educationminor@binghamton.edu for more information. We recommend that students petition before starting the internship. The petition for counting internships as credit can be found .

Action Hours, Events, & BearChats

The purpose of the action hours (non-paid volunteer work and event attendance) component of the Education Minor is to give students the opportunity to experience education outside of the classroom. Students will expand on their knowledge through education-related events, as well as through practical experience in the community.

The requirements are as follows:

1. 10 hours of non-paid AND non-credit volunteer work

  • volunteer work must be related to the field of education. 
  • students must submit their hours through the Minor's BrightSpace page under "content" for their volunteer hours to count.
  • questions about volunteer work can be sent to edminhrs@binghamton.edu.

2.  Attendance at two Events hosted by the Education Minor

  • Events range in size, style, and topic.

3. Attendance at one BearChat hosted by the Education Minor.

  • BearChats are large-scale events that focus on broader topics in education.

Note: Failure to complete these requirements will result in an inability to graduate with the Education Minor. To graduate with the Ed Minor, requirements must be fulfilled (completed and submitted to BrightSpace) at least 2 weeks prior to your graduation date.
